at the back of the intake make complete sync less critical than the motorcycle example you gave. Using that same example, the only way to really know how much each TB is flowing is with the mercury stick you mentioned. I have thought about it a lot - like you - and came up with the idea of blocking off the balance tube ( temporarily) and then running a mercury stick ( or perfectly matched vacuum gauges) to each ported vacuum connection ( one left one right) theoretically (!) when you had balance both gauges would read the same off idle. because of manufacturing tolerances and wear - like you mentioned- there is no other way to really know if they are exactly balanced. Having said all that, thats why it's not so critical in the FSM. the balance tube talkes care of minute errors. You did a great write up - just adding another opinion...
